My Kids and Pornography

When I was a kid.  (Read horny younger teenage.)  I stumbled across one of my father's Playboys.  When I mean stumbled across, I mean after picking the lock to his office door, find the  secret panel behind the old tax records, underneath his loaded .45, next to the hip flask of Jack Daniels.  Really, what's a kid to do when there are pictures of naked women right out in the open like that.

I remember spending hours just staring at Miss July and her wonderful curvedness.  One picture could keep me occupy for days.  Sex seemed to be in my every waking thought.

When cable TV showed up I swore I would never leave the house.  Before HBO was on 24 hours a day and was in desperate need of content, HBO relied on filler material.  In between the movies, there was Aerobicise.  Arobicise was a filler show of 5 -20 minutes of circa 1982 women doing exercise on a rotating dias with dance porn music in the background.  I pretty damn sure no women were watching that  segment.  You can see a sample you tube video here: Aerobicise Black Thongs

My point?  I worked try hard as a kid to just see a hint of skin and sex.  These days a simple web search  turns up more sex, naked people and porn they you no what to do with.  To my kids this means NOTHING!

When I first became a father I panicked and start porn proofing the house: Porn filters on the routers, cut the cable, and hide the porn.  I even made web portal pages for my kids.  Each child had their own starting page with kids safe links.  I made sure the kids were always supervised on the computer.   By the time the oldest two were in high school, the had earned enough money to buy their own computers.

Once again I panic,  I had visions of all my kids locked in their rooms in a nonstop iron festival.   Turns out they could care less.  My main problem was ending their addiction to World of Warcraft.  My youngest spends her time on tumblr.   I've checking my tracking software and router traffic:  Nothing.  No Porn. Not even a blip.  I know my web kung fu is NOT that good.  I keep asking myself why?

Then the reason hit me.  Familiarity breeds contempt.

If you want to see women (or Men) with bananas in their butts, all you have to do is do a web search and HUNDREDS of webpages, photo, audio, drawings, and movies show up.  Maybe what has happen is all the questions my kids have ever  or things they wanted to see had have been answer and seen in one day.  The reason why the young don't hang out in smutland is because they have seen it all and have become jaded.  Porn does not  have any appeal because they can find it whenever they want.

Of Course, I could be wrong.  So just to be on the safe side I'll keep hiding my Jello Midgets Asses boxed set of 25 dvds.

When Did That Go Out Of Fashion?

So the High Priestess and I are doing some end of the year cleaning: Recycling old magazine, getting things together to donate, and going through the closets. 

The High Preistess is pulling out item she hasn't worn in years: sweaters, blouses, pants, dresses and skirts.  I love skirts and dresses on women, but then she tells me that current fashion is bare shaved legs without stockings or nylons.  WTF.  THP works in an office, when did stocking go out of fashion?!?  Even in winter?  This just seems to me another moving target of fashion that women can not hope to match.  Unless you are young and have the legs of a dancer, and happen only to be in the perfect skin population, please cover your gams up. 

Doesn't seem fair does it?  Women have been wearing stocking for centuries, and now they are no longer in fashion?  Maybe it's just an Iowa City thing  or it could be a self image thing.  I notice several women I've worked with get quite upset when the new crop of younger students show up each semester.  Really!?!  Why even bother comparing yourself to them?  Find what works for you and stick with it.  I have notice women are harder on themselves and each other than any sane man. 

At my current age, I'm just happy to be in any room with women wearing whatever:  stocking or no stocking, tanned, pale like cream or black as the darkest night, shaved or unshaved.  Just give me confident women any day of the week. That's sexy.  I'm sure most men would I agree when me.

Why I read Playboy

Yeah, I gonna say it, even if it is a cliche´.  I read Playboy for the articles.  Actually, I read the cartoons first, then the articles: Twenty Questions, Essays, Columns, Interviews, and small stuff: Party Jokes, Advisor (Things that make me laugh).   I do the same thing with the newspaper.  Cartoons first then the news.

I don't really pay attention to the women, unless it's someone unusual.  Melissa Gilbert (from Little House on the Prairie) comes to mind.  I like my women a little thicker, more Zaftig than fake boobs and flat butt.

I can say this for all advertising, porn, or women batting their eyes at me trying to get my attention through sex.  For me, sex only works if there is truly a chance I'm going to laid.   I live in the real world and so does my friend and his two sidekicks.  As attractive as these women might be, the fact is I will never see them in person, nor have any distant hope of having sex with them.  I have a better chance of an alien showing up at the college and teaching me how to build an FTL drive.  (Which would be AWESOME!)

Now the woman across the street, in the grocery store, or at the local Stop-n-Rob.  That's a different story.  Any given day there is 10 - 90% one of these real women will want to take me home and bang my brains out!   That's what does it for me! It took me 25 years to figure this out.  I'm sure my college days would have been a lot less frustrating if I knew then , what I know now.

I like the interviews over the past couple of years: Patton Oswalt, Idris Elba, Steve Buscemi, etc

I also like the article on current events: Somali Pirates, Cyber Crime, Drug Smuggling, etc.  A lot of really cool stuff once you get past the half naked women.

The High Priestess went shopping for panties. That's the 5 panties for $25 deal that Victoria's Secret pushes every three months or so. (Aside: I was just at the mall today and VS is selling 7 panties for $25. So I guess things are bad in the undergarment retail business.) The HP buys this stuff online, so she doesn't have to be in the store with the perky, gaunt, coeds VS always has working there. SO VS gets our address and an email. The Wife has gotten an email from Victoria's Secret everyday since then. Plus, we get catalog, LOTS of catalog! So far, that's one a week.

VS charges three dollars for their standard catalog and five dollars for their holiday issues. How do they make any money? I figure if we see four more catalogs before the High Priestess needs new panties, the panties will be free.

The High Priestess was in a meeting the other day and one of the other attendee was the head of The Women's Resource and Action Center. Eventually, the talk turned to a discussion of the attacks in Iowa City. There have been two more this weekend. It may be more than one attacker or the same guy. Either way the increase in the attacks mean the attacker has become more bold or has encouraged more people to act out. I am sure this leave the head of WRAC madder than a wet hen. However, she seems more patience than I.

It seems she knows more about what the police are doing than the general public. Although, this ticks me off, it is a good thing. Less information in the public eye means the police have a better chance to catch this guy. The head of WRAC seems to be content now, and if she is OK then I guess I'm OK.


I just hope this doesn't escalate into more violent attacks.

Bad Cop, No Donut
After the 28th attack this past weekend, the Iowa City Police Dept. think there is a pattern to the attack on woman in the downtown area. DUH! You guy put that together all by yourself? Last Fall several women were attack during football weekends, first at home games and now even away games. Is it that hard to catch this guy? I know ICPD has undercover women police, I've seen them. How hard is it to catch this clown! They even have a composite image to work with!

A dusk attack on a woman Aug. 31 appears to fit the pattern of roughly 27 similar offenses that have occurred since September 2006, Iowa City police Sgt. Doug Hart said.

Police responded to a report that a woman was grabbed while walking near the intersection of Bowery and Van Buren Streets around 8:15 p.m. The assailant fled north down an alley off of the 400 block of Bowery Street. The victim did not receive any physical injuries during the attack.

"It's possible it's the same person," Hart said. "The time is a little off. It's difficult to tell right now."

Police have now recorded 28 attacks on women in near downtown Iowa City since September 2006. Eighteen could be by the same offender; the other 10 differ in suspect description.

There have been three previous attacks in the South Johnson and Van Buren area.

Hart said police are continuing to focus on near-downtown areas to curb attacks, but they have not apprehended any suspects in the cases.

Police are paying attention to people who match the suspects' descriptions who are skulking alone in dark areas, he said.

Some areas near downtown are receiving added attention, he said, and all officers have been briefed on the attack trend.

"We're trying to address the areas in and around where the assaults are occurring," he said.

In response to the high number of attacks this year, women may choose to carry Mace or other personal weapons, but Hart said there are both advantages and disadvantages.

While personal weapons may be able to avert an attack, he said, they could escalate one, too.

"Make yourself aware of things that could [make a situation] go sideways," he said. "Be aware of the risks that go alongside that."

Karla Miller, the executive director of the Rape Victim Advocacy Program, said people need to be knowledgeable on how to use something such as Mace before carrying it.

"When you pull that out, you need to be committed to using it - otherwise, it will get taken away from you," she said. "It would be an assailant's worse nightmare to run into someone who's going to hurt them."

RVAP offers counseling, a crisis line, and other advocacy services for victims of attacks, and Miller said most women think their situation needs to be more serious than it is to go to RVAP.

"You really can't gauge [the impact of these crimes] by what was done," she said. "It has to do with what its impact has been on you."

Miller encourages people to travel in groups, stay on well-lit roads, and know how to kick off high heels if fleeing is necessary.

The increase in attacks could have women thinking: "'It feels like I'm preparing to do battle every time I'm going to go out the door,' " she said.

"But it doesn't have to feel like that."
