President Bush and Congress have pledged billions of dollars to rebuild New Orleans to"just the way it was". Maybe we should rethink that. Here we have an opportunity to build a great city in the new millennium. A city built with all the world modern technology. A 21st Century city, that is not 2 feet below sea level, has green spaces, allows walkway and fuel efficient transportation. Restore the French Quarter if you must, but revert the rest back to delta and rich farmland. Move the port, docks and infrastructure to the outskirts away from where they are now. Place the new city back from the shore out of the floodplain and on higher ground. Rebuilding the old city back where it was is just asking for trouble and courting disaster. Global warming will just increase the amount of hurricanes we will see and rising sea levels will surely cause more flooding on a regular basis. Just look at Venice, Italy. Once dry plazas are regular flooded by the smallest rain showers. I for one don't look forward to spending 10-50 billion dollars every 25-50 years putting New Orleans back together like a perpetual Humpty Dumpty.
