DIYS GARDENING:  I've got tomatoes!

I must says my tomatoes are growing like gang buster!  They must like the rain and hot weather we have been getting, which is a little usual for Iowa.  Never the less, I'm very happy with my success.  I haven't needed to fertilize or use any pest control at all.  However, I think something is eating my broccoli, so I may have to start using the hot pepper sauce solution.

Something is eating my broccoli, too! What is your hot sauce remedy???

I have always put manure and hay in the hole that I plant my tomatoes in and have had wonderful results! This year I planted my garden in old water troughs. I'm experimenting!

You have green caterpillars eating your leaves. Look really close and you will see them. I missed them the first time because their color is almost the same as the brocolli plants. You should use a batteria called Bt (bacillus thuriengensis). Bt does a great job killing theses little green bastards in a safe organic way. Brand names under which this Bt is sold include “Dipel”, “Thuricide” and “Green Step”.

The Hot pepper solution is for rabbits and the other furry mammals that try to eat the leafy plants. The Hot pepper stuff does nothing for the green caterpillars. - just fyi
