GOD, I HATE GRADING PAPERS.
Teaching I like, except when dealing with students who really could care less about being in college. I loathe grading. Why? Because it makes me feel bad. Sometime I understand that some student just don't get the suject this week. That just makes me sad. Other times I have student who I know have some sense but instead spend their time bullshiting their way through homework, quiz, or exam. That just makes me mad. If you don't want to do the work, why turn in crap for me to grade? The last case is the saddest for me. Some people just don't belong in college. I'm not talking about the people who don't care and treat community college like high school, but if you have problem with 3 X 50 we need to talk.
Just to get off on another rant, but there are two types of student I wish I could give a boot to the head. Johnny "I wanna be an engineer" Smith who says "I don't do math or science and I don't want to take any courses in the engineering program, but I I want to be an engineer becasue they make lots of money. Then her sister Joan "I wanna teacher", but I can't do math and I hate science, but I love little kids so i guess I'll be a grade school teacher. Dufus, don't you realize those little angels will pick up on your loathing for math and science fast than bloodhound on a steak dinner?
Did you know the US is seeing a shortage of home-grown doctors because today's students (and I quote)"Don't want to work that hard in med school" whole generation of spoiled 20something living with their parents, because the real world can be "such a drag". All I have to say to the US of A when you are laying there on your back 5 years from now getting that hip/knee/boob job/penile enlargement/whatever don't be surprised when you look up an see Ms. India staring down at you with a scapel in her able American trained hands.
Did you know people are starting to travel overseas for medical surgery and reveice better care than here at a cheaper rate? NPR Article
